Beyond their questionable efficacy, the chemical ingredients in these treatments, such as permethrin, malathion, and lindane, pose significant health risks, especially to children. Over time they create super lice that genetically mutate to become resistant to the active ingredients in these kits.

While head lice themselves do not carry disease, the implications of an untreated infestation can escalate from mild irritation to more severe health complications like skin infections and in rare cases anemia. Addressing a head lice infestation promptly and effectively is crucial. Understanding the lifecycle of head lice is crucial in comprehending how quickly an infestation can grow if left untreated.

  • You are using OTC lice medication. Repeated applications of over-the-counter (OTC) products frequently fail to eliminate resistant lice. The most recent report, issued in 2016, found that most lice in 48 states are now resistant to pyrethroids. These pesticide-resistant lice are called Super Lice.
  • You are using the wrong lice comb. Usually OTC products come with a cheap lice comb that fails to grab all the nits. The problem is, if you miss even 1 tiny nit, they will hatch, then live lice will multiply and start the lice life cycle once again.
  • You are using home remedies. Home remedies are typically ineffective at best and dangerous at worst. Home treatments like mayonnaise, petroleum jelly, olive oil, vodka, and even kerosene has been shown to be ineffective and should be avoided.
  • You are not checking every member of the household. A lot of parents assume that the child found to have lice at school or daycare is the only one with lice. That’s usually not the case. Head lice are spread by direct head-to-head contact, it’s common for the entire family to contract head lice, including parents! If only one person in the family is checked and treated, the lice will likely come back to that person from another family member and the re-infestation process will begin all over.

Head lice are highly contagious. Mothers have a 90% chance of contracting head lice from their children. Siblings have an 80% chance, caregivers have a 35% chance, and dads have a 20% chance of contracting head lice from an infested child

Anyone, anywhere can get head lice. Most commonly, head lice infestations affect preschoolers, elementary schoolchildren, and the families and caregivers of the affected children. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the United States has six million to 12 million infestations among children three to 11 years old each year.

A tickling feeling of something moving on the head, itching (caused by an allergic reaction to the bites of the head louse), irritability or sleeplessness (head lice are most active in the dark), and head sores caused by scratching are the most prevalent symptoms. Head lice infestations can be asymptomatic, however, especially if it is the first or a light infestation. Only 50% of those who have head lice are actually itchy because of lice bites

Head lice must feed on human blood in order to survive. An adult head louse will die within 24 to 48 hours of being off a human head. Nymphs can only live for several hours without feeding. Nits must be kept warm by the scalp, and are therefore not viable when off of a human head. For all of these reasons, it is not very likely that lice will spread by way of inanimate objects. However, it is not impossible, and therefore basic cleaning of bedding, carpets, upholstered furniture, hairbrushes, stuffed animals, hair ties, and clothing should be done whenever head lice is found in the home.
